Formosa 1 - Taiwan
Formosa 1 is Taiwan's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, located 2–6 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli County. It has an installed capacity of 128 MW, with 22 wind turbines.
The project was developed in two phases:
Phase 1 (2016): This phase involved the installation of two demonstration wind turbines, marking the initial step toward offshore wind energy development in Taiwan. This effort faced significant challenges, including typhoons and insufficient local infrastructure, but it established a foundation for future growth.
Phase 2 (2018–2019): An additional 20 turbines were installed with the help of international partnerships, completing the project. Formosa 1 became operational in December 2019 and is supported by a 20-year power purchase agreement with Taiwan Power Company.
This project is considered a pioneering achievement in Taiwan’s offshore renewable energy sector, pushing the development of local infrastructure and regulations while laying the groundwork for future offshore wind project
